This one is for Stephen

The idea for this book was suggested by a boy in a school I was visiting, who asked me to write a book called The Moving Castle.  I wrote down his name, and put it in a safe place, that I have been unable to find it ever since.  I would like to thank him very much.

A friend of mine named Michael loaned this book to me.  He told me that it was just an "okay" book but that Hayao Miyazaki was making an anime of it in Japan.  So I read it.

IN WHICH A WITCH BEWITCHED THE HATTER'S DAUGHTER...  AND THEN SOME.

Sophie lived in the town of Market Chipping, which was in Ingary, which was a land in which invisible cloaks and seven-league boots really did exist.  Which meant that nothing was quite as it seemed and anything could happen - especially when the Witch of the Waste got her dander up.  Which was often.

As her younger sisters set out to seek their fortunes, Sophie stayed in her father's hat shop.  Which proved most unadventurous, until the Witch of the Waste came to buy a bonnet, but was not pleased.  Which was why she turned Sophie into an old lady.  Which was spiteful witchery.

Now Sophie must seek her own fortune.  Which means striking a bargain with the lecherous Wizard Howl.  Which means entering his ever-moving castle, taming a blue fire demon, grappling with green slime... and meeting the Witch of the Waste head-on.  Which was more than Sophie bargained for.

"JONES HAS OUTDONE HERSELF IN THIS FROLICKING, WARMHEARTED FANTASY...

  • I try to maintain page numbers for audiobooks even though obviously there aren't any. I do this to keep track of pages read and I try to use the Kindle version page numbers for this.
  • Synopses marked with an asterisk (*) were generated by an AI. There aren't a lot since this is an iffy way to do it - AI seems to make stuff up.
  • When specific publication dates are unknown (ie prefixed with a "Cir"), I try to get the publication date that is closest to the specific printing that I can.
  • When listing chapters, I only list chapters relevant to the story. I will usually leave off Author Notes, Indices, Acknowledgements, etc unless they are relevant to the story or the book is non-fiction.
  • Page numbers on this site are for the end of the main story. I normally do not include appendices, extra material, and other miscellaneous stuff at the end of the book in the page count.

See my librarything icon librarything page. I use this site to catalogue books and it has more details on books than goodreads does.
